Hihiri (with energy)
Hauora (breathing life)
A unique kaupapa Māori organisation founded and governed entirely by whānau hauā, Te Roopu Waiora was established in 2001 to ensure whānau with disabilities and their communities have access to information and services that affect them most. Based in Manukau for the last 18 years, Te Roopu Waiora is led by a team of kaimahi/mentors with lived experience of hauātanga, heading the following initiatives:

Whakauruhia:

Career Training with whānau and rangatahi hauā. Whakauruhia builds on the unique skills and lived experience of whānau and rangatahi hauā seeking career and work opportunities.

Trainees explore:
  • Disability concepts, challenges, solutions and unique abilities of whānau hauā
  • Culturally appropriate access evaluations of marae and public services
  • Working as an experienced team with diverse impairments
  • Traditional Maori responses and disability concepts with interested organisations

Aromatawai

The power of whānau voices united
How you feel about support services is important so korero mai! A simple survey of 16 questions, Aromatawai encourages service users to choose an organisation and assess how well it provides services to you and your whānau.

You can do this without being identified. We’ll gather all the feedback and give it to organisations on your behalf so they know if they’re doing a good job or need to make improvements.
If enough surveys are completed, we’ll show the results online so you can see how whanau are rating services collectively. Visit www.paerangi.nz or click on the link below the graphic to complete Aromatawai.
Ph: 0800 100 132 or Text: 021 491256 for more information.

Te Matapuna

A living, community knowledge centre

Through research and sourcing indigenous knowledge, the work of Te Matapuna guides all our whānau led initiatives.
Currently we are leading a PhD study and gathering Waitangi Tribunal evidence on traditional Maori and indigenous responses to those with impairments.
Our research includes western disability concepts, barriers and cultural solutions to better understand ways whānau hauā might overcome obstacles to improve wellbeing. Findings from Whakauruhia and whānau views from Aromatawai provide valuable contributions to Te Matapuna by informing strategies, policy and advice for government, iwi, hapu and marae.
